Our community is growing every single day. Our primary mission at womenonthemat is to support women and girls in the sport of competitive grappling and jiu jitsu. We believe jiu jitsu changes lives and makes us better people. Jiu jitsu prepares us for the chess game we call life. It teaches us how to assess and move with the rushing stream of challenges and threats that we face on a daily basis. Some which can be neutralized by changing the angle and thus gaining a different position and better perspective and some which must be met head on. One of the most valuable lessons it teaches us is humility. Jiu jitsu is a philosophy for living. It’s really is that simple. We are wholly committed to raising global awareness. Whether on the mat or off the mat one thing is for sure we are a global community of women AND men who share a love of the sport and a respect for one another, for our hard work and tireless commitment to improving our jits game and improving ourselves as human beings.
I recently came across a face book post about Seana Rossi, a purple belt at Toronto Jiu Jitsu who is fighting the greatest match of all. She is fighting off her back and she’s fighting a much bigger opponent. She was diagnosed in 2006 with ovarian cancer. Ovarian cancer is one of the top ten cancers that effect women in their life time. I know she is giving it her all. As is typical costs for her treatment are exceedingly high. I don’t know how you can put a price tag on life but insurers do it all the time. I know we are all so busy with seemingly important life tasks but isn’t this what we are preparing for, the biggest match of all. Seana needs our help, our prayers, our wishes, our support, our love, our positive thoughts, our kind words, our emails, our letters, and our financial support. Maybe you think it’s silly to send a dollar but everything counts, every ounce of effort counts, every card, every prayer, every message, every penny counts. Skip your full fat mochatinichoc-latte tomorrow or your kale/kiwi/ginger green juice and send that $4 to help Seana. Have your school do a open mat donation minimum $2 just one Saturday and send it to Seana. You can check out more about Seana at seanasfight.com. Please tell your friends and pass it on. Thank you.
